The inciting incident sets the stage for a captivating story, igniting the spark that propels readers into a world of suspense, adventure, or intrigue. As a novelist, a well-crafted inciting incident is crucial for capturing your audience’s attention and setting the tone of the adventure that’s about to unfold.

In essence, the inciting incident serves as the catalyst for the main conflict and sets the story in motion. It’s the moment near the beginning of a story that causes its direction to shift or change. Being so critical in the structure of a good story, it’s important to make sure it’s engaging, memorable, and intentional. Why? Well, the inciting incident has the power to take a story from good to downright addicting.

The Characteristics of a Memorable Inciting Incident

An inciting incident typically occurs in the first 25 percent of your story, or the first few chapters. Personally, I like to incorporate a bit of worldbuilding before I introduce it, as this formula provides an excellent opportunity to showcase how your fictional world looks before and after the inciting incident. With that being said, not every writer or reader loves that approach. Some prefer to see the incident sooner rather than later, so finding the perfect moment to introduce your inciting incident is generally up to you as a writer. However, there are a few characteristics of inciting incidents worth keeping in mind.

A memorable inciting incident must be unexpected. Sure, every reader will go in expecting something to happen, but what it is should catch both the protagonist and the readers off guard. It should be something that demands attention and raises questions, leaving the reader eager to uncover what happens next.

Additionally, a memorable inciting incident should be significant. It should be a turning point in the story, with far-reaching consequences that impact the protagonist’s goals and desires. It should create a sense of urgency and propel the protagonist into action, setting the stage for the main conflict. If you think about the story like a hill, with the climax being the very peak, the inciting incident is where the story starts that upward slope.

Lastly, a memorable inciting incident should be emotionally charged, evoking a strong reaction from the protagonist and a similar response from the reader. Whether it’s a moment of intense fear, overwhelming joy, or heartbreaking loss, the emotional weight of the inciting incident can leave a lasting impression on the reader. That’s a good thing! You’ll want to keep them hooked, so building that emotional resonance is key.

The Importance of the Inciting Incident in Storytelling

Without a well-executed inciting incident, a story may lack necessary momentum and fail to engage readers. As I mentioned, it’s the slope in the hill that starts to hike upward, so you can think of it like the first leg of a great story. If it’s missing, readers may feel that the story lacks direction… imagine driving over a bumpy road rather than smoothly moving up a hill.

The inciting incident provides the motivation for the protagonist to embark on their journey, setting the stage for character development and growth. It establishes the stakes in your story, which you’ll often see translated in writing circles as an if/then statement. Beyond effortlessly helping to summarize your book, the inciting incident also acts as a hook, drawing readers in and enticing them to continue reading. It creates curiosity and intrigue, compelling readers to find out how the story unfolds. By capturing the reader’s attention early on, the inciting incident ensures they remain invested in the story until the very end.

Examples of Impactful Inciting Incidents

To better understand the power of a well-crafted inciting incident, let’s explore some examples from popular works of literature and film.

In Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, the inciting incident occurs when Katniss Everdeen’s younger sister is chosen as a participant in the annual. This unexpected turn of events forces Katniss to volunteer as tribute in her sister’s place, thrusting her into a deadly competition where she must fight for survival. This inciting incident is not only significant and emotionally charged, but it also establishes the oppressive nature of the dystopian society and sets the stage for rebellion.

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, the inciting incident occurs when Bilbo Baggins gives the ring to Frodo. I mean, come on… the Shire is laidback and carefree, Frodo wouldn’t embark on this dark adventure without a bit of a push. In this moment, Tolkien sets the stage for Frodo’s character development and growth. He establishes the young Hobbit as the story’s hero and sets the stakes for the story that unfolds.

In my book, Industrialized, Part One: Experiment, Kristina has just suffered the death of a potential love interest when her corset suddenly tightens. The stakes are already high, already life or death, when the inciting incident occurs: Titus just saved Kristina’s life, so he encourages her to help him form a Resistance to save other lives. Kristina, who was unhappy but tolerating her existence, suddenly has a reason to take on a new role. When King Robert orders his own superweapon, the importance of that inciting incident is suddenly cemented.

These examples show how impactful inciting incidents can shape the trajectory of a story, create suspense, and engage readers on multiple levels. Each creates an emotional response, sets the stakes, and changes the course of the story. Your manuscript’s inciting incident should, too!

Tips for Brainstorming and Developing a Compelling Inciting Incident

Crafting a compelling inciting incident requires careful thought and planning, which can be a challenge if you’re more of a pantser than a plotter. Here are some tips to help you brainstorm and develop a memorable inciting incident for your own story:

  1. Create a contrast: Consider how you can disrupt the protagonist’s ordinary world and introduce something unexpected or extraordinary. Contrasting the protagonist’s normal life with the inciting incident creates a sense of tension and intrigue. The Hunger Games is a great example of this method at play… the new life unfolding for Katniss is totally different from the one she knew.
  2. Establish stakes: Think about what the protagonist stands to gain or lose as a result of the inciting incident. The higher the stakes, the more invested the reader will be in the outcome of the story. Lord of the Rings does this beautifully in Fellowship, as the stakes are suddenly high for a Hobbit that previously enjoyed a rather carefree existence.
  3. Evoke emotion: Tap into the reader’s emotions by creating an inciting incident that elicits a strong reaction. Whether it’s fear, excitement, or empathy, an emotionally charged event will leave a lasting impact on the reader. In Industrialized, emotion is the primary driver of Kristina’s desire to move forward with Titus’s plan. Joaquin just died, Kristina’s iron corset just nearly killed her, and Titus is at the sidelines with a solution. In that moment, it’s hard to not sympathize with Kristina.
  4. Consider the ripple effect: Think about how the inciting incident will reverberate throughout the story. How will it affect the protagonist’s goals, relationships, and motivations? Ensuring that the inciting incident has far-reaching consequences will keep the story engaging and dynamic. A great example is in Jurassic Park (the movie… I admit I’ve never read the book, but now I’m thinking I should). When Dr. Hammon invites Alan and Ellie to his island, the paleontologists’ goals shift rather significantly. I mean, suddenly it goes from let’s study dinosaurs to gee, I hope these dinosaurs don’t eat us. That’s one heck of a ripple effect!
  5. Test your ideas: Once you have several potential inciting incidents in mind, test them out by discussing them with others or writing short scenes. Pay attention to the reactions and feedback you receive to help you determine which inciting incident resonates the most.

By following these tips, you can develop a compelling inciting incident that hooks readers from the very beginning and sets the stage for an unforgettable story. I especially love the concept of testing the waters by having fellow writers, friends, or beta readers take a peek at your short scenes… it’s how Vinnie’s Valor was born!

The Relationship Between the Inciting Incident and the Protagonist’s Goals

Your inciting incident should be closely tied to the protagonist’s goals and desires. After all, an inciting incident should set a series of events in motion to directly challenge the protagonist. It should force them to step out of their comfort zone, face their fears, and make difficult choices.

In addition to acting as a segue toward challenge, the inciting incident can also serve as a catalyst for the protagonist’s personal growth and transformation. It may push them to reevaluate their values, confront their weaknesses, or develop new skills. Create a character web to explore what’s most feasible for your manuscript’s cast and most likely to drive your protagonist toward the goal.

The Inciting Incident’s Impact on the Overall Story Arc

The inciting incident plays a crucial role in shaping the overall story arc. If you think about the story like a hill again, your inciting incident is the beginning of the slope, that slow slope upward is the rising action phase, and the peak is the climax.

While it may seem like the base of the hill shouldn’t impact where it peaks, we’re not talking about geology here. In storytelling, the inciting incident impacts the climax and resolution of the story. By establishing the stakes and creating a sense of anticipation for the reader, it sets expectations. And the climax, which is the peak of the story’s tension and action, is often a direct result of the inciting incident and the protagonist’s journey since then. The resolution, on the other hand, provides a sense of closure to the story, tying up loose ends and addressing the consequences of the inciting incident.

In essence, the inciting incident acts as the foundation upon which the entire story is built. It sets the tone, establishes the stakes, and propels the narrative forward, ensuring an engaging and satisfying story arc.

The Power of a Well-Crafted Inciting Incident in Captivating Readers

A well-crafted inciting incident has the power to captivate readers and set the stage for an unforgettable story. It grabs the reader’s attention, establishes the stakes, and propels the protagonist into action.

By ensuring that the inciting incident possesses the characteristics of being unexpected, significant, and emotionally charged, you can create a memorable moment that hooks readers from the very beginning.

As you embark on your writing journey, remember the power of a well-crafted inciting incident. It’s the spark that ignites the story, and with careful planning and consideration, it can take your storytelling from good to downright addicting.
